When my husband and I got married, we combined our DVD collection that resulted in us having a couple hundred DVDs. Through a couple of moves and multiple furniture rearrangements, I found that moving that many DVDs is a pain! Now, I will say, we have it better than my parents did when they moved into their new house about 15 years ago. They had a crazy amount of VHS tapes that had to be packed and moved into the new house. Needless to say, most of them never came out of the boxes as DVDs began taking over.
Even though DVD cases are fairly small, when you have a couple hundred of them, they can take up quite a bit of valuable space. So I began thinking of how I can reduce the space they take up while still making them easily accessible. Who would’ve thought that a cute decorative storage box from HomeGoods would’ve done the trick? Oh yeah, it was under $10 – that’s obviously the best part! 🙂
Once I had the box, I made a quick stop by Target for some DVD storage sleeves. See where this is going? I tossed ALL of the original DVD cases and slipped all the discs into a nice, thin little storage sleeve with a see-thru window. Let me tell you, it was somewhat freeing to get rid of all of those bulky cases, but also a little anxiety-producing! I can’t explain it, but somehow it was sad to get rid of them and made me feel like for some weird reason I’d regret it. Well, nope – that has not been the case. I have now successfully fit all of the almost 200 DVDs (we had some duplicates that got donated – ok, a LOT of duplicates) into this cute little storage box that fits perfectly into our entertainment area.
To take my storage a step further, I decided to arrange the DVDs in alphabetical order and make dividers using my handy-dandy Silhouette Cameo. I actually used the Cameo to cut the dividers and the tabs with yardstick and made the letters using vinyl.
And to take my OCD – I mean organizational skills – to the next level, I downloaded an app to catalog all of our DVDs. I’m notorious for going out and buying several DVDs during a massive sale or on black friday only to find out when I get home that we already have them all. Ugh, so frustrating! So why not just get super organized and keep them all with me when I go shopping? The app is called Movie Buddy and it’s free up to the first 50 DVDs, then it’s $4.99. For me, it’s worth it because I’ve spent far more than that on DVDs that we already own. :/ It keeps track of the titles, if you’ve watched it, if you’ve loaned it to someone, you can categorize movies to make it easier to search, and you can make a wish list of movies that you want to purchase. Seriously, it solves so many of my problems!
What solutions have you found that help to keep your DVDs organized?
