Spring 2018 ORC: Week 1
If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you have probably seen my pictures and stories showing some things going on around my house. My house is a huge blank canvas right now, so I’m seriously itching to get going on decorating. The problem is, there are so many things I want to do, that I don’t know where to start! Well, that problem is working itself out due to the timing of the One Room Challenge.
Most of you around the blogosphere are familiar with the One Room Challenge created and hosted by Linda from Calling It Home, but for those of you who may not be aware, let me give you the rundown on the challenge. Every April and October, a six-week challenge begins for designers and DIYers alike to transform one room in their house. There are showcased designers that are selected to participate in the event, but anyone is welcome to participate and follow along during the six weeks of the challenge.
Since I spend most of my time in our guest room, which doubles as my office, I decided that’s where I want to start. This room is pretty bare, pretty stark white, and all around blah. My workspace is also relatively non-existent. I work on a tiny desk that I bought a few years ago from Target. It works I suppose, but I really would like to feel like I can spread out a bit more.
So let me share with you some pictures of my guest room/office at the moment.
As you can see, there is nothing impressive about this space, except for maybe the size of the closet. But even that is doing me no good right now since the only storage space in it is the wire shelves (which I will be taking down ASAP!).
My plan for this room is to make it a relaxing and functional space so I can easily work throughout the day, but guests will still be able to feel relaxed and get a good night’s sleep when spending time with our family. More specifically though, my plans include:
- Painting the entire room and closet
- Wallpapering one wall
- Board & Batten one wall
- Make curtains and pillow covers
- New headboard
- New bedding
- “Built-In” desk, cabinets, bookcases
- DIY Console Table
- New Wall Art
- Repaint existing desk and move to closet
- Convert closet into craft room
- Add storage in closet for craft supplies
Honestly, I feel like there’s way more that I’ll end up doing, but these are the big ones that come to mind at the moment. With all this on my list, 6 weeks is going to fly by! I’ll have to work every day to meet this deadline, but I’m excited about the outcome because I know I’m going to love it!
Want a sneak peak at some of the details of the room? Below I’ll share the color palette and some key items I’m planning to include!
So that’s it for now! The UPS guy literally just delivered my wallpaper, so I know what I’ll be working on tonight! Be sure to follow along with me on Instagram to see the behind-the-scenes of my room makeover and all the projects I’ve got going on along the way!
Also, be sure to follow along with all of the participants of the One Room Challenge by following along on Instagram or the One Room Challenge website!

I’m also working on a multipurpose guest room. I can’t wait to see how you create a multi-functional space out of a very basic room. I think your built-ins sound like a great idea for maximizing space and utility!
Happy decorating!
